Big Bluestem

Big Bluestem, Andropogon gerardii

The idea that “grass is green” isn’t exactly right. Get in close to look at a clump of big bluestem and you’ll find pinks, blues and yellows in addition to green.

Big Bluestem is a warm-season grass, which means it does most of it’s growing in the summer. If it’s happy it can get tall, reaching 6 to 8 feet in height.

You can find it in any of the prairies at the Prairie Garden Trust, but one of the best patches is in the prairie at the northern edge of Beaver Lake.
