Some people think the leaflets on this fern resemble Christmas stockings or a winter sleigh; hence it’s name. More likely is that it’s one of the few woodland plants still green in December, making it ideal for use in holiday decorations.

This is one of the most common ferns at the PGT. You can find clumps of it growing along rocky creeks on wooded slopes.
