Today Matt arranged a controlled burn on two of our prairies: the Dog Leg Prairie and the 5-acre Prairie. Matt did a lot of work preparing for the burn to make sure that it was contained. With the weather just right and with a good burn crew it looks like everything went well.
Lorna and I went out to inspect the areas at sunset. As we were checking it out we kicked up a covey of Bobwhite Quail. We typically don’t burn more than a third of our prairie in any given year. That assures adequate cover for birds like the quail. I’ve been told that by doing patch burning you also helps insects such as butterflies.
