Wheel bug, (Arilus cristatus)
Today while I was enjoying looking at the first blossoms on an annual sunflower I noticed a Wheel bug. The name comes from the cog-like structure on it’t back. Wheel bugs feed on other insects by grabbing them and injecting it’s hypodermic beak (the red part in the picture) into some soft part of their body. It then injects enzyme-laden saliva–which immobilizes the prey and turns its parts into porridge–after which the predatory bug sucks out all the victim’s bodily fluids.
Is that creepy or what!
