Great Blue Heron
The first signs of spring are upon us! This afternoon we heard the call of an Eastern Phoebe for the first time this year. They were checking out a potential nesting site in a rock shelter along Hiller’s Creek.
We also saw 8 or 9 Great Blue Heron’s standing on their nests. Lorna said she figured they were putting in early reservations for the best locations at the rookery that we have on the property.
Yesterday Dr. Gabe McNett brought his Ornithology class from Westminster College out for a field trip. They reported seeing some Brewer’s Blackbirds. That’s a new species for the Prairie Garden Trust. I’ve have not identified one yet but Matt and Justin reported seeing some this afternoon. The birds were working over the ground of the recently burned middle prairie.
