Ebony Jewelwing

Calopteryx maculata
Ebony Jewelwing, (Calopteryx maculata)
I saw this iridescent damselfly fluttering in the emerging grasses this morning. At first it looked all black but as I got in close I could see a full spectrum of saturated colors. Then I noticed the hairs on it’s legs. To help show the color and the hairs I will zoom in for you:
Calopteryx maculata

Damselflies are similar to dragonflies, but they hold their wings along, and parallel to, the body when at rest. The Damselflies tend to be much smaller than Dragonflies. This Ebony Jewelwing (also known as the Black-winged Damselfly) isn’t more than in inch long.
