Kingfisher Sex

Violet Wood Sorrel

The Belted Kingfishers have been unusually noisy recently. I’ve been hearing their rattling call more than normal the last few weeks. Perhaps it is because it is mating season?

Today as Lorna and I were enjoying a picnic lunch at the rookery overlook when a female Kingfisher landed on a branch near us. The branch was hanging out over the center of Hillers Creek. A few seconds later male dropped down on top of her and for several seconds we watched them mate. I’ve never seen that before.

Of course I did not have my “bird” lens with me so I can’t show you pictures. However, the ground around the bench is covered by these blooming wildflowers.
