Northern Cricket Frog

Acris crepitans
Northern Cricket Frog, (Acris crepitans)

This weekend I hiked in the stream bed of Hillers Creek. Since it has not rained in awhile is was mostly dry. Among the rocks and gravel small frogs jumped to get out of the way. I got in close to take a look and found one of the smallest vertebrates that I had ever seen, a Northern Cricket Frog. This frog is only 3/4 of an inch long. In contrast a Spring Peeper is at least an inch long. I read that they can jump up to 6-feet in a single bound, about 100 times it’s length.
