Indian Grass, (Sorghastrum nutans)
The Grasses & Sedges Walk scheduled for Saturday August 18th has been canceled. The severe drought isn’t giving us much to look at. Normally mid-August is when the prairie grasses are at their best. However, with no meaningful rain for a couple months the plants are shriveled, dwarfed and not flowering.
This morning I took the shot you see above. This Indian Grass should be 3-4 feet tall and deep green. Now it is turning yellow and isn’t over 18-inches tall. I found no flower heads.
Paul McKenzie has assured me that he will be willing to lead the walk next year.
