Preventing Tick Bites

Tick

With the temp going up to 72-degrees today, I can feel that Spring is coming. That means that ticks and chiggers will be out soon. To get ready, today I dipped all my outdoor pants and shirts in permethrin. I do that once a year, and I’m set.

Two keys to preventing tick bites:

1. Use permethrin treated clothing

2. Tuck your pants into your boots (it forms a physical barrier)

My recipe:

I like to use concentrated permethrin (36.8%) which can be found on Amazon and at farm supply stores. One quart will be enough for several years.

1. In a large tub or sink, mix ¼ cup of Permethrin (36.8% concentration) in about 10 gallons of water.

2. Immerse your pants, shirts and socks until they are saturated with the mix.

3. Pick up the dripping wet clothing and drape them over outdoor furniture to dry.

Wash your clothing infrequently (2-3 times per year) since washing will reduce the effectiveness of the permethrin. If you wash the clothes frequently, you’ll have to repeat the treatment.

Some people prefer to use permethrin spray, but soaking is more effective.

Permethrin should not be swallowed, and after treating your clothing, wash your hands well with soap and water.

Insect repellants that contain DEET are less effective and have to be applied every day.

Tick Check

Soon after ever walk in the country it’s a good idea to do a “tick check.” That’s best done in a bathroom. Take off all clothing and look everywhere for ticks. If you see one, pinch it with your fingers and toss it into the toilet.
