Puffball Mushrooms

Puffball, Lycoperdon perlatum

I’ve been seeing a lot of mushrooms this summer; they must like the rain. These egg-shaped mushrooms are called puffballs because when it’s ripe and you squeeze it, it emits a cloud of dust-like spores. Kids love it!

At the PGT you can find puffballs almost anywhere. I often see them along the mowed paths in the prairie or on rotting logs.
