Rare Plum found at the PGT

Hortulan Plum
Hortulan Plum, (Prunus hortulana)

The rare Hortulan Plum is considered to be the most beautiful of all the American plums. It is now blooming in several upland locations at the PGT. Jeff Carstens who is working for the USDA in Ames Iowa will come down this summer to collect some specimens to help preserver the genetic diversity of this ornamental plant.

I was not aware that we had different kinds of wild plum here until Jeff contacted me last week. Previous plant inventories done here had identified it but I never understood it’s significance.
