Sculpting a New Woods Edge

I’ve always appreciated the art of sculpture, but it’s usually creating a thing of appealing form that stands by itself. This past weekend, David Perrey used a highlift (which is like a bulldozer but can raise its front end up and push and grab things) to knock over trees to sculpt a more rounded, natural edge between our field of prairie plants and our woods.

The main goal of the Prairie Garden Trust is to create a nature garden. Like a garden, we’re creating visually appealing landscapes using plants. Unlike most gardens, we’re using native plants and native landscapes.

The cleared area will be seeded with grasses and flowers that will flow from the prairie into the woods. It was amazing to see how much could happen in just two days. It’s also amazing to see how your perspective seems to grow larger with the new curve to the edge. You simply see more land than what it was with a short, straight edge. It’s sculpture on a landscape scale and incredibly fun.
