Snowberry Clearwing

Snowberry Clearwing, Hemaris diffinis

On the edge of Potter’s Lake yesterday I saw what looked like a hummingbird getting nectar from Pickerelweed. Using my binoculars, I saw that it was actually a moth, a Snowberry Clearwing.

Its called a Clearwing because the wings have large central patches that lack scales and are thus clear.

You can find them feeding on any patch of flowers that offer nectar.
