Sycamore, Platanus occidentalis

This week I’ve been noticing sheets of sycamore bark along paths by the creek. As the trees grow they periodically shed plate-like scales of bark and leave behind irregular patches on the upper trunk and branches. 

Sycamores are some of the biggest trees we have at the PGT. The best place to see them is along the banks of Hillers Creek.
