Tick Bite Prevention

Now that warm weather has arrived the ticks will be back.

Two tricks to avoid bites:

1. Physical barrier – tuck pants into boots or socks. Don’t wear shorts because it exposes your skin directly to ticks.

2. Treat your pants, socks, hats, and shirts with permethrin.

I prefer permethrin to using insect repellants like DEET which is found in OFF because it doesn’t smell as bad, it is much more effective, and it only needs to be applied once a year.

Permethrin recipe:

1. In a large barrel mix one half cup of Permethrin (10% concentration) in about 10 gallons of water.

2. Dip pants, shirts, and socks until they are wet with the mix.

3. Pick up the dripping wet clothing and drape them over outdoor furniture to dry.

You can guy permethrin from Amazon. I found Bayer Permectrin II Insecticide, 32-Ounce on Amazon, 10% Link

Permethrin also prevents chigger bites and mosquito bites.

Tip: Don’t wash your outdoor clothing very often since washing removes some of the permethrin.
