Wild Persimmon

Wild Persimmon, Diospyros virginiana

Our wild persimmons are ripe. Katy (our dog) knows every tree and will pause under a few favorites on our daily walk. Flavor seems to vary tree to tree—she’s picky. I don’t love them myself; they’re pretty astringent. Still, it’s a good late-fall food for wildlife. If you’re out at the Prairie Garden Trust, look for the orange fruit hanging on bare twigs.
